“Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” Coretta Scott King
We celebrate the recognition of Juneteenth, the achievement won when this date, June 19, will be observed by the US as a federal holiday. June 19, 1865 was the first date that the Union Army proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. While President Lincoln officially outlawed slavery in 1862 with the Emancipation Proclamation, enforcement of this edict relied on the Union army defeating the rebel states and making the abolition of slavery the law of the land. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, and the last to fall.
What this means is that starting now, we have an annual recognition of both the ending of the stain on this nation of slavery, and the beginning of repairing the damage. There is so much left to be done. This is one small step, achieved by this generation, here and now. We at Fischer Family Law PC applaud the activists that made this happen. Whether you are in government, on the streets, or in your community, your voice matters. You are heard. And our nation will bow our head on this day every year, June 19, and listen to the first whispers of freedom. May those sounds turn to a deafening thunder for equality and equity that cannot be ignored.
